The World Trade Center has been the center of the financial infrastructure
for the United States for many years. Yet, when two hijacked airplanes
crashed into them on Sept 11, 2001, their existence was quickly erased
from our eyes, leaving only memories and for me, a few photographs.
I took these pictures from 1997-1999 on my various trips to New York,
and they've been on this web page ever since. The comments below were
added after the attack, of course. I do not have photos of the
trade centers being attacked. For those, click here:

Dear Mr. Heller,
I wanted to thank you for the beautiful pictures. It is now the only way
I can show my daughters what New York looked like from the World Trade
Center.
I would like to buy a photo of the "View from Liberty Island" so I might
be able to give it to my mother and father as they were to celebrate their
40th wedding aniversary later this year at the W.O.W. restaraunt. Please
let me know your asking price and I'll gladly offer it or this now gone

In memory of things past...
My thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, and with
everybody. This is a terrible event for everybody.
I still can't believe they are gone. I spent about four months in
Manhattan, and I remember the size of those toweres and how they dominated
the whole downtown. Here in Europe, I saw people cry when they showed the
pictures of the collapsing towers on TV.
Your pictures are good, some great even (Downtown/WTC and WTC from
Brooklyn), and will help us to remember that which was. Another reason
for liking photography.

Yesterday's films of hijacked airliners plunging into the Twin Towers and

seen yet. The last time I was in Manhattan, I was too young to appreciate
the Twin Towers, now I will never get another chance. It is hard to
imagine that such wonderous buildings could become the grand tombs of so
many of my fellow humans. When I look at the gorgeous depictions of the

can create, and astounded at the beauty of people, and life itself.

Whenever I flew into New York City, I felt like the towers represented
America reaching high into the sky. Not one, but two towers . . . like
arms reaching into and beyond the clouds.
To see them crumple before the world's eyes, triggers my most fearful
side, like the U.S. could crumble so quickly.
But they were far more than a symbol, and indeed like the Phoenix rising
out of the ashes, the United States of America will rise above and even
higher. For freedom . . . all for freedom.
The World Trade Center buildings were an enormous loss. But a small loss
compared to the thousand upon thousand of innocent souls that horrifically
suffered so needlessly on September 11, 2001 . . . the day Hell arrived.
Perhaps this is the Hell that we thought would arrive at the end of the
millennium.

I spent many weekends, many "all-nighters" and much much time working with
several law firms (especially at the now Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, LLP
firm back when the firm was called Brown, Wood & Ivey) in both One and Two
WTC. My heart and prayers go out to the workers and families of the
management and firms located in the WTC. As a US Army veteran of WWII and
member of the legal community, I proudly say that the people of NY truly
show the world the real backbone of every American and their indominable
spirit! Yes, we will go on and be strengthened even more because of this
unspeakable act of cowardice by terrorists.

I wanted to add my thanks for this page and to suggest it stay as it is.
Some have asked for comparison shots to the current devastation, or
pictures of the collapse.
I think it's good to have one page we can show our children, one page to
savor and honor what was. And for those who have lost loved ones, it's a
site where they can look and remember, just for a moment, without having

Thanks for sharing these inspiring pictures.
The architecture was ahead of its time, visionary, going against
conventional concepts of beauty. That, coupled with the buildings'
function of promoting peaceful exchange, made the WTC a wonderful symbol
of America's iconoclastic spirit and enduring ideals.
I only hope that our reaction to the destruction of the towers does not
temper that spirit or undermine those ideals.

For some reason I wanted to see pictures of the towers that once stood.
My Wife and Son were there a year or so ago and saw them in person. I was
told that they were beautiful and enormous. I am saddened that they are
gone now. I will never have the chance to see them in person. I want to
say that our prayers in our little town are with all of the victims and
their families. I noticed that a lot of our local community gathered with
lit candles on this night to pay tribute to those who have fallen victim
to this trajedy.
I also would like for them to know that we are praying that God will
keep his hands over the survivors until help can arrive. I was so
devistated when I seen this taking place on Tuesday. May God be with us
all here in the USA and mostly with those in NYC.

I have never been to NYC in my life, but I regret not going now. Those
buildings were gorgeous and symbols of American Pride. They will rebuild
them and as I heard Scully from Godsmack say" They will be like two middle
fingers at the bastards who did this!! We will never be beaten , we will
never be demoralized.....because we are Americans!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
In the late 1980's to early 1990's, I used to work at 2 WTC, 106th
floor for Shearson Lehman. Althought I took many photos of the view, I
never thought to take any photos of the actual buildings. I just
figured, I could always see the buildings, but wanted to remember the
view. Unfortunately, I was so very wrong.
Your photos helped me to remember the beauty of those towers. It's
almost like seeing an old friend. Thank you for sharing your photos
with the rest of us. I am sure there will be many people who will enjoy
seeing the towers again.
I am sending your web address to all my former co workers and friends
who would be interested in seeing the photos (even a cousin in Italy).
Good luck to you and thanks again for helping to ease the pain and loss,
even just a little bit.

I read some of the feedback. For those of you who unfortunately never got
to see the towers in person, it truly is a great loss. As beautiful as
these photos are, you still cannot get the same impact as seeing them in
person. I grew up in NY and admired the skyline all my life, almost to
the point of taking it for granted. I am so sad that my children will
never be able to go to the "top of the world" and see the spectacular
view. They will be greatly missed. Thank you for sharing these photos so
we can remember them standing pround and tall. This website has been so

Thank you Mr. Heller.
I live in the Seattle area, and thus have grown up in the shaddow of the
Space Needle. I drive by it nearly every day, and take for granted that
it will always be a part of the beautiful backdrop of the Puget Sound.
With the horrible attacks this week, and especially after sharing the
responses of those who have been so touched by your photos, I reallize
that nothing is for sure. Now I find myself trying to imagine what it
would be like to drive by Downtown and not have the Needle in the skyline.
My heart and my prayers go out to the people of New York, who not only
have to suffer through their losses and the pictures on the news; but also
have to be reminded every time they gaze at the incredible skyline of
Manhattan.

Thank you for your photos. They meant to terrorize us but
instead they have filled us with resolve. They meant to
tear us apart but instead they have united us. They meant
this for evil but instead we will turn this into good. They
meant to shame us but instead we are proud. They meant to
turn the WTC into a grotesque specter but we will turn it into
an international shrine dedicated to life, liberty and
freedom so that "...government of the people, by the people,
for the people, shall not perish from the earth." For
those who have died in the WTC, their work is finished;

After going back to school 2 blocks away from the wtc i had to get some
pictures of the wtc. Looking at your pictures is so soothing for some
reason. I just wish that i appreciated them more, as a new yorker you run
around the whole day and even when you are right across the street from
something that awsome you don't even care to pay attention...the only
clear memory in my head was when i just moved here from Russia, i remember
lying on the benches by the fountain that was right underneath the towers

arguing with my mother why one seems taller than the other eventhough they

Dear Fellow Members Of the Human Race,
I am a NYC Transit Bus Driver who works in Manhattan. I passed the WTC
every day going to and from work. Looking at that Beautiful Skyline and
thinking to myself what a wonderful thing it is to live here.
Since 9 / 11 /01 I have been assigned along with many other bus drivers to
driving Police, Fire, EMS, FBI & National Guardsmen down to the site &
anywhere they need to go. I have been down to Ground Zero { I hate that
term } many times in the past 12 days. All I can say is " My God What Have
They Done ". The TV news media photos do not really show the true
devastation. It is very different seeing it up close and in person.
I want to thank all of the people who have been helping us down here,
they feed us give us clothing if we need it and even moral and emotional
support. Every time I pass the site I cant help but to shed tears,
sometimes I think I am going to loose it, and have a nervouse breakdown
from all of the emotion I have inside of me.
I have been working 16 hrs a day doing my small part in this rescue
operation. People cheer and wave flags when they see our city busses
coming from the site. One lady even hugged me and thanked me for being one
of the heroes helping out. Funny thing is I dont feel like a hero, the
real heros are still beneath the rubble of the WTC.
My family was personally effected from this horrific crime against
humanity. My Brother In-law was trapped for 30 minutes under what was left
of the Marriot Hotel. He suffered 80 stitches to the face, multiple
bruises and fractures. He was among the missing for 7 hours. He is now at
home resting and recovering, Thank God ! . The physical scars will heal
quick but the emotional damage he suffered will be with him for years to
come.
My wife and I always wanted to go to the top of the WTC, I kept on
saying " We live here, the towers aint g

Talofa!!! I'm Angeline K. Otemai-Yehyun from American Samoa. We Samoans as
like Americans witness on television and news broadcast about the attack.
I really felt deeply for those who lost their lives on the WTC1&2. Just by
watching the airplanes crashing into the towers was very horrible to see.
As a Citizen of United States I would like to thank this opportunity for
this website by Dan Heller. It is my pleasure to see the most beautiful
sight of the tower before September 11, 2001. But for those victims that
were on the jetliner I give my soft sympathy for them because they knew
that they were going to die. As of today since the attack. Here in
American Samoa is being alerted and aware of those evil doers Hijackers
that will enter the Island. Everyday we turn on that switch to see if we
are being secure from those haters.
Any way, I love the pictures their really colrful and outstanding indeed.
I wish I could have one but to tell you something even though I haven't
Been to New York for all my life but I can see that I 've been there in my

As a native New Yorker, I am ashamed to say
how much I took "The City" and all it's beauty
for granted. Like most New Yorkers all we see is
the crowded streets, delayed subways, high cost

and a mother that grew up in New York City. My grandparents and great

November. I was on the New Jersey side of the river when we came around
the corner at night and suddenly there overlooking the river was the city.
My very first look at the city, and there stood the twin towers, such an
incrediable site. I spent time the next evening in the city and went to
the base of one the twin towers and just looked up. You can't imagine the

These beautiful photographs have given me solace in wake of the events of
September the 11th. The Twin Towers replaced the Empire State Building as
my favorite building when I was a kid back in the 1970's. I finally got
to see them from the air when I flew into New York en route to Frankfurt,
but was never able to visit them in person. In the aftermath of this
attrocity, I have become more determined than ever to move to New York,
which has been a lifelong dream of mine. I will be a writer living in New
York despite these montrous acts.

My first memory of the Towers was going to a Pink Floyd concert in NY in
1976. We were 16 year old kids and made a day of it in the city so we went
in and got on an elevator to see how far up we could get. We managed to
get to the highest maintenance floor under the top. It was a full floor of
empty space with only the walled frame and windows all around. The sights
of the city from so high up were awesome all around and we snickered that
we got a free tour without paying for the observation deck. The building
was only around 6 years old, so the construction on that floor was still
relatively new and incomplete.
I lived near the city all my life, so the towers were always around
whenever I got into the city. They towered over lower Manhattan like a
weird collosus. Like the poster a few posts back, I have a strong memory
of standing at their base looking up the mesmerizing parallel lines of the
exterior design thinking they were not as tall as they looked from a
distance.
I think NY should use the opportunity to replace them with one huge
tower higher than anything else in the world...

I worked across the street from the WTC for 13 years. It was an exciting
place to be. I witnessed Phillipe Petit walk a tightrope between the
towers, George Willig climb up the side of one tower, and the King Kong
movie (with Jessica Lange) being filmed. My father was a welder and
helped build them. As a child, we visited the site when it was just a
tremendous hole in the ground. My children were very proud that their
grandfather helped build the towers. Now I grieve for a friend who is
missing, so I thank you for helping me remember better days.

Hello Dan, and anyone who has ever gazed upon the "Trade" and drew fom its
strength. I was young, and always had a fascination with larger than life
things like tall buildings. I just naturally fell in love with the Trade
cause its strong and bold nature, as a silent but majestic sentinel in the
skyline of Manhattan just made you wonder if, if it was just possible to
dream that big, abd reach that far. As a kid those towers symbolized
success, strength, and that stability needed to thrive in a tough urban
jungle like New York, and this world. I mean you wake up in the morning,
and no matter how early you did, those towers were there, before you in a
way, and at night after work as you go home, they were still there
dedicated, showing what it took to be a success. They truly had a life of
their own. World Trade, commerce, business, hard work, strength, and
dedication, the keys to being something in my life. Though they reached
the upper echilon in their class, of being worlds tallest, and a short
time later, lost it, and still stood, did their job, shows another key of
success, no matter what, how you come up short, keep standing. Now as I
look upon that empty hollow space, where so many died, so many dreams
disappeared, so many hopes crushed in rubble and ashes I must do what my
symbols of motivation cannot do now. As the tears roll down my face while
I type this, I MUST stand, for them, for New York, for all of America, WE
MUST STAND, together, united, for liberty, and decency and hope and
courage. Now, as I look upon my life, as a great mentor does, they fade
away with only the lessons taught to remember them. I feel personally
attached to those buildings. Because they motivated me, and now I am doing
pretty well, and did get the chance to visit my beautiful towers, but now
since they were taken from me, once again, I will do what they cannot%2

The Day the Americans Stood Still.
The day the still bodies mourned. It took a toll on every one in the
United States. The type of violence came unexpectedly, having everyone in
total shock. The time of tearful eyes flooding down the faces of
survivors, friends, and families; as well as the national audiance and the
heros. God bless these people who risk their lives to save the victims.
Gone but not forgotten....the lost lives and the twin towers. They are
dead but rest in a better place. They are all gone to heaven now living
with God.

Dan,
I came to your site to search for the skyline that is no longer in tact.
I can't help but feel that after Sept. 11th, we are no longer in tact- as
New Yorkers and as Americans. The whole world has changed. Yet your
beautiful photographs are a testament to the magic that was.
Each time I would drive past the New York Skyline, especially upon
entering what I call my native city, even though I was born in Budapest
(another beautiful city), the
exhilaration I felt was like no other in the world. My heart would beat
faster, and my pulse quickened, and I felt that any dream I had was still
a possibility in this amazing city. We have all truly lost something of
ourselves.
Thank you for preserving these images. Thank you for allowing us to
express our thoughts here and to read what others have said. As I glance
at the comment of Kevin McDowell of the FDNY above me, my heart aches. My
heart aches for all of those who have witnessed the terrible sights and
sounds of Sept. 11th, and for all those who are no longer with us; for all
for those who have lost family members and friends in this unspeakable
tradgedy. Besides your eternal images, my one consolation is that we who
are alive, still have our voices. Our voices are still soaring above the
ruins. They cannot take that away from us. Let us never forget and let
our voices carry our memories of our brave heroes and victims in to the
future, to go where they cannot go. Lets make sure that they have not
died in vain and that in their memory we will act and not remain silent.
We shall overcome. We shall prevail. We will smile again, one sunny day.

...these pictures bring back a memory...It was back in the spring of '88
and I had just landed an outside sales job and had to train with a
seasoned rep in New Jersey. Being from the South, I had never been farther
north than Baltimore. The day started in Glen Burnie, MD and our last call
before doubling back was in Montclair, NJ. I took a look on the map and
hoped we would have a chance to go into NY, just to say "I had been
there". Well, due to time constraints, we didn't get to stop in NY.
However, from the interstate...though far away...I could see the images of
the twin towers of the WTC. I had done a book report on skyscrapers in
junior high and now finally was getting the chance to see one
(bonus...two). After our last call, we headed back south. Again I saw the
towers to the left out the window, and my partner said if we ever get back
up here again we'd try to get over to the city. I spent that night in a
hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ and when I talked to my wife on the phone, I
mentioned my first day on the job went well and "Oh I saw the World Trade
Center" too!
I've never had the chance to get back up 95...I'll never forget what I had
the chance to see that day, though from a distance, forvever. The pictures
are more than my mere words can describe. Thanks for posting them

Thanks so much for the pictures.
I am a chaplain for the Broken Arrow Police Department in
Oklahoma and was at the WTC for over a week in October.
I walked through the rubble of the once beautiful buildings
and tried to make sense of a senseless act.
The first tower to be hit (and the second to fall)
was leaning upon the building beside it...
the smaller building was totally burned out and
crushed from the weight of that awful day.
At one point in walking the perimeter, that small
building took on the shape of the Murrah building
in Oklahoma. My mind raced back to April 19th, my
feet stopped moving, but my tears wouldn't.
I remember the pain and the anguish of the Murrah bombing
and was asked my many NY cops and firemen how is compared...
and the only answer was... it didn't compare... it couldn't
compare.
The Murrah building ... The World Trade Center towers...
I was so impressed with everyone, especially their
desire to find as many of the victims as possible...
Every NY cop... every Port Authority cop... every fireman...
and rescurer are to be commended. Commended for their
tireless courage and determination.

Excellent photos on the site. Today is May 27, 2002, more than eight
months after the attacks on September 11. I first saw the towers from a
distance my freshman year of high school. Then I saw them up close on a
tour that took me to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, the United Nations, and
the World Trade Center. Standing between the buildlings and looking up is
the most phenomenal feeling in the world and I'm sad people won't
experience that anymore. I still feel nauseus when I watch Friends, NYPD
Blue, or any other show based in New York and catch a glimpse or flash of
the towers. Yesterday I was watching a program on TLC called "WTC:
Anatomy of the Collapse" and it made me physically ill to watch the
destruction of the twin towers over and over again. Thank you for
providing some peaceful, serene images for us to look at. Other pictures
of bald eagles with tears in their eyes overlooking the towers and angels
overlooking the burning of the towers still bring tears to my eyes, but
your pictures are beautiful, and to quote TLC, "how it was and how it
should be." I shed a few tears on Septmeber 11, from grief and shock and
disbelief. I am a Philadelphia native still living here between
Washington and New York City and still worry about being a target for
terrorists. My mother told me she still remembers where she was when she
found out President Kennedy was shot. I will ALWAYS remember where I was
when the Twin Towers were hit.

I worked in Tower Two, so these photos really hit home. Just to see how
they were, and now there is nothing but a big hole downtown. You have some
beautiful pictures and thank you for sharing them.

It's funny how today when you watch a movie or tv show that you've seen a
million times you notice the Towers, when before they were there in the
background. You notice them more for not being there.

A mere "thank you" is hardly adequate for your work. I am grateful to you
for this site, for your pictures, and for the memories they have provided
me. The images of the Towers burning are etched into a part of my memory,
but now several breathtaking wholesome images are there as well. In
deepest gratitude, thank you!

It has happened nearly a year ago now ... I still remember how it was to
take notice of this disaster, it just feels like yesterday ... standing in
a department store in Munich in the afternoon, each and every TV set
presenting you the same sad pictures coming from NYC, not playing the
typical MTV videos as usual. People were standing there in front of the
screens, quiet and embarrassed. It felt like our daily life started to
freeze. I stood there, too, not realizing what really had happened there
in the US, speechless of the things I watched. I was shocked, and went
home with the picture of the burning towers on my mind. Later that day and
at home I turned on the TV, and the towers were gone ... in the meantime
they collapsed. I was shocked again because I never would have thought
that this could once happen.
God bless us all, especially all the victims and their loved ones!

Your pictures of the World Trade Center made me start to cry. On June 23,
2002 I had my Senior Prom at Windows on the World- the last prom to ever
take place there. It was one of the happiest days of my life. My date
Justin was in Navy ROTC, and was sent to Ground Zero on September 12,
after they weredesperate for volunteers. Two weeks later in the mail he
sent me an odd shaped mirror. It was from one of the little rooms that we
had sat in admiring the view at the prom. I still keep the piece in my
room.
Please, share my story as well as your pictures with anyone you can. I
thik you are amazing.
Love,
Kelly
