The berbers (bérbére) live in the southern
part of Morocco, in and around the high Atlas Mountains.
A nomadic people, they are frequently found in small, make-shift tents
plopped in the middle of the desert or in the mountains near an oasis or
river. They raise farm animals to use not only as a food source, but as
"currency" for their barter system. However, Morocco recently brought
electricity to most villages, so there's been more of a sense of permanence
among their culture. The Berbers are comprised of various ethnic groups,
each with different customs, lifestyles and even skin tones, which suggests
that there was hanky panky going on with some of the sub-Saharan peoples
at some point in the past.
