Hand Surgery for Dupuytren's Contracture
ylw-text.gif
stitches-a.jpg
ylw-text.gif Dupuytren's contracture is a hand disorder in which the fingers bend toward the palm and cannot be straightened. The little and ring fingers are most commonly affected but all the fingers can be involved. Dupuytren's contracture progresses slowly and is usually painless. In patients with this condition, the tissues under the skin on the palm of the hand thicken and shorten enough that the tendons connected to the fingers cannot move freely. The affected fingers start to bend more and more and cannot be straightened.

Inheritance is the most important factor; Whites, especially those of Celtic origin, have the highest incidence, and it runs in families. It is uncommon in pigmented races, and males are at least twice as often affected as females, in some reports as high as 7 to 1. The peak incidence is between the fifth and the seventh decades of life.

My personal condition is rare, in that it affected me in the early 30s, and grows much faster than in others.
