Eastern Cuba is mostly rural communities, inhabited mostly by farmers
who till the land with live oxen. Crops include mostly sugar cane,
tobacco, and fruits and vegetables. Back when the Russians provided much
of Cuba's income, transportation was more widely available, so the
eastern part of the island was a local vacation getaway, complete with
many resorts, beaches and other tourist attractions, originally targeting
the local market. Now, most of the tourists are internationals, who come
to escape the more lively western half of the island.
