This parade was in commemoration of the killing of eight medical
students on November 27, 1871 by Spanish soldiers for the profanation
of the tomb of a virulent anti-Cuban Spanish journalist. The parade is
an annual event, attended by thousands of medical students, teachers,
doctors and many others in the medical field.
